My first completed expression of my trip to Thailand. Learning about my grandparents’ Chinese heritage and our family Thai traditions has been one of the most meaningful experiences of my life. The story of my grandparents’ journey from China to northern Thailand and how they acclimated to their new country and raise their children and grandchildren, and especially the life of my grandmother, has given me a lifetime of inspiration. To be honest, I am still processing it all. This piece is the start of that processing. The edges of this canvas are lined in gold leaf, which is heavily influenced by the Thai temples we visited. I loved the ornate attention to detail and all of the gold. Mai Pen Rai 40x60 (mixed media, rice bag pieces, Thai newspaper, linen)
One of my favorite memories of our Thailand trip was rummaging through a HUGE trash bin of empty rice bags with my mom and cousin in Chiang Mai. I instantly saw the colorful bags and said that I needed to take’em home with me for my next art pieces. So in they jumped with me to grab the prettiest things. Here’s a small shot of a piece I just finished.
Taking a short break from popsicle making because I haven’t had a paintbrush in my hands in weeks! Feels good to get gritty in the paint. Unfortunately, I painted over this after too much overthinking of how I wanted to communicate my recent travels and honor learning about my family’s lineage. That’s okay, it’ll come. 😊 #artisexpression #abstractartist #travel
Discovered these at a market in Bangkok two weeks ago and have been envisioning them in so many new art pieces. I’ve played around all day with them while I wait for the AC guy. 🥵 🧘🏻♀️ 🥵
A lovely exhibition tonight thanks to @jscanvas. Thank you to my friends and family tonight who came to support me. 💜 #popupartexhibition #houstonartist
Sound ON: Back from an incredibly inspiring trip to Thailand. The sights and sounds have given me inspiration that I think will last a lifetime. My family there inspires me most. Such a transformative trip where I learned about my family, our history and our culture. It is filled with so much color, joy, heartbreak, deeply rooted resilience and pure human determination to thrive. I think you may see that some of my future artwork will hopefully represent these things. ❤️ #inspired #foreverchanged
Sporting my new “curtain bangs” thanks to @memorial_hairstylist and @chenia.lopez! Also sportin’ a new, finished piece. It’s even more vibrant in person. Lights off!!!
Excited to be a part of this pop-up art exhibition where I get to debut the popsicles. ☺️ Hope to see you guys. 😘 Sarah
